John Blackburn in the Navy
Dad was 21 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Like most of the young men in America he rallied to the cause and enlisted in the Navy. He did his boot camp in San Diego and his initial sea training on the USS Kennison.
He was later assigned to a minesweeper, YMS-322 out of Pearl Harbor and was part of the Invasion of Guam in 1944. Later he would also participate in the Invasion of Guadacanal.
Like most vets from WWII he did not like to talk much about the time he served. Those were hard times for young men, especially those with families.
